An A+ Student: What Good Grades and a Good Driving Record Have in Common

ContentImage-GradeAPlus.jpg-550x0As insurance advisors, we are well versed in the discussions that come up when it’s time for a young driver to set out on the path of getting their first driver’s license.  We are accustomed to encouraging and advising parents on the types of coverage needed to make sure they are protected once their baby (who isn’t a baby anymore) is out on the open road.

A fun comparison that we can make when speaking with these families?  Comparing a good driving record with keeping good grades.  Most teens are at least familiar with the importance of high marks, even if they might not be overly committed to keeping them that way.  So, how are good grades similar to your driving record?

Both Affect Your Future

Just like good (or bad) grades can affect your future college plans and/or career opportunities, a driving record can affect your future insurance rates, and even your ease of obtaining or keeping your driver’s license.  It’s vital that you make good decisions now to prevent problems in the future. Poor judgment, whether on your report card or behind that wheel, at this point could have some pretty unfortunate consequences down the road.

Both Require Commitment

Good grades don’t come without a certain level of hard work and sacrifice.  You have to be committed to studying hard, sometimes saying no to social events (especially if you need more sleep or study time), and putting in preparation time for projects, tests, and even routine homework.  In this same way, a good driving record requires commitment on your part.  Saying “no” to temptations like speeding when you’re running late, allowing friends to ride with you when they aren’t supposed to, or making “simple” mistakes like running a red light have a major impact on your driving record.  If you are focused on keeping your record clean, and you are committed to making decisions that reflect your focus, you will be setting yourself up for a great driving career!

Both Require Accountability

This is where our discussion turns to the parents.  Just like good grades often require a certain amount of input and encouragement from parents, a clean driving record can sometimes require that mom and/or dad step in and take the keys or offer some “unpopular” opinions.  While this can be frustrating for a young driver, we encourage teens to keep in mind that their parents have their best interest at heart.  Additionally, we remind parents that they are accountable to their young drivers.  The decision they make behind the wheel will be reflected in how their teens drive.  Some of the poor judgments or decisions they make, could be repeated by their kids when they are behind the wheel.
