How To Prepare For Hurricane Season

Hurricane season has officially arrived in Florida! As hurricane season starts at the beginning of June to the end of November, many Floridians stack up on extra water, food, batteries, generators, and more. But, don’t let these things be the only things you do to prepare. Along with the housing damage that hurricanes and tropical storms can bring, hurricanes can cause a lot of property damage that can affect the land you live on and also your safety. Keep on reading to see the steps you should take in order to properly prepare for this hurricane season.

• Secure and move exterior items: Make sure you trim trees, shrubs, bring patio furniture inside, and any items that are lose. Putting these items in the garage is approved of, but if you have carport, it is highly recommend to bring those things inside (even if it will cramp the inside of your house). It is important to tie down any outdoor sculptures or tool sheds outside. Move cars into garages and make sure to not park them under trees or power lines.
• Check interior hangings/windows: Secure all inside wall hangings, pictures, sculptures, etc. It is recommended to take pictures off the interior of your house before any hurricane hits to help prove insurance claims after. Installing storm shutters to protect doors, windows, and skylights is a great way to prevent any damage. For a last minute DIY protection, you can nail pieces of plywood to window frames to help against any debris.
• Unplug appliances and store documents: Store all important documents, such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, insurance policy information, legal papers, social security numbers, etc in safe places that cannot get wet. Move household appliances in closets or cabinets, away from exterior openings.
• Plan, plan, plan! Plan for evacuation routes and places where you can contact all family members. Select a meeting place with friends/family to see how they are doing and if they need help. Build an emergency kit that includes food, bottled water, cash, blankets, radios, etc. In the house, it is important to designate a shelter room that has no windows and doors and is in the central part of the house.
