Coverage or a Cup of Coffee? The Choice Is Yours

When you mention “life insurance” to people, you are usually met with one of several responses…

• “Life insurance is important for me because I’m the main breadwinner…my wife and kids don’t need it though.”
• “I can’t afford life insurance. It’s a luxury.”
• “I’m still young. I don’t need to think about life insurance yet.”

While we have lengthy responses for each of these statements, we want to focus on one in particular: “I can’t afford life insurance.”

Yes, life insurance does cost money.  However, you might be surprised at just how little money it actually takes to adequately cover yourself and your family.  Did you know that giving up your daily cup of coffee from your favorite local cafe would be enough to cover a policy for yourself?  What about giving up a couple of meals out each month and opting to eat at home instead?  That could be enough to purchase coverage for your loved ones.

It’s true!  For as little as a dollar per day you can often find life insurance policies that would help cover you should something happen and you no longer be there to provide for your family.  Still trying to decide if it’s the right choice or if it’s worth giving up that cup of coffee?

Consider this: the average household of a young family wouldn’t be able to maintain their current expenses for more than 6 months if the main breadwinner was suddenly taken out of the equation. For many of these families, the strain would be felt in a matter of only weeks.  It’s also important to remember that there would be additional expenses such as funeral and burial costs, possible need for childcare if the stay-at-home parent is no longer able to be there, etc.  Suffice to say, most families would be in financial trouble very quickly if a tragedy hit their family.

Life insurance isn’t just about you.  It’s also about protecting the ones you love.  So when you look at your family, ask yourself how much do you really love that daily cup of coffee?
