Hitting the Road: Why Motor Home Insurance Should Be Part of Your Summer Plans

airstream-1359135_960_720Summer is here and with it has come the wave of heat and humidity that Central Florida is known for.  Here in Polk County, temperatures are less than pleasant, and leave us wanting to do little more than sit in front of our fans or air conditioners and wait for the sun to go down.  For those who enjoy traveling by RV though, this is a prime time of year!

Many motor home owners head out of the state over the summer.  Once the kids are out of school, families pack up and head out, with a cooler mountain destination or a midwest sightseeing road trip on their minds.  However, some of these adventurers are hitting the highway uncovered, and that can be a costly mistake.

Too many travelers assume that their auto policy can extend to cover their RV or motor home as well.  While some auto policies might offer limited coverage on a motor home, they are most definitely not comprehensive in their provisions, and can leave you with a significant bill in the event that something happens on your trip.  That’s why we encourage clients to seriously consider a motor home policy when they buy their first RV or motor home.

A motor home specific policy provides for things that your typical auto or homeowners policy won’t cover.  For example, an auto policy won’t cover your personal belongings inside your RV in the event of an accident.  That means your clothing, cookware, and anything else that isn’t part of the actual vehicle portion of the RV will be left uncovered.  Additionally, an auto policy won’t always cover parts of the motor home that aren’t “auto specific” or are considered attached accessories. This includes awnings, satellite dishes, rooftop air conditioners, etc.

Another factor that many people don’t consider is what they would do themselves if something happened to their RV or motor home while on the road.  If you break down, or get into an accident, and you are hundreds of miles from home, you don’t want to be left stranded on the side of the road with nowhere to turn.  Auto policies don’t provide for this situation, but a motor home policy often carries coverage for not only towing and transportation costs for your RV and passengers, but sometimes offer some provision for lodging as well until you are back up and running.  We think that is definitely worth the cost of the policy since it protects not only your motor home, but you and your family as well.

If you are considering a road trip this summer in your RV or mobile home, and you aren’t covered, give us a call!  Carroll Marshall Insurance can help you determine the best policy for you, and make sure you can go on your adventures with complete peace of mind knowing that you are covered, no matter what comes your way.

Happy travels!
