Not Optional: Why You NEED Renters Insurance

apartment-406901_640While nearly all homeowners carry homeowner’s insurance (97% to be exact), only 37% of those who rent their home carry a renter’s insurance policy.  Unfortunately, these people are putting themselves at a huge risk, whether they live in an apartment complex, a duplex, or even a rental house.  See, most renters believe they are covered under the insurance policy held by the property owner.  However, this is NOT the case, because a landlord’s policy only covers the property itself, not what is contained inside the apartment, house, etc.  In other words, all of your possessions are at risk if you do not carry your own policy.

Need more convincing of why you should carry renter’s insurance?

First, it’s affordable.  On average, a renter’s policy costs less than $200 for an entire year of coverage.  That’s minuscule in comparison of what you would spend out of pocket to replace all of your personal property if it was lost in a fire, stolen, or otherwise destroyed.

Second, renter’s insurance covers not only property (like a broken stair rail, a run-over mailbox, or a neighbor’s broken fence thanks to you hitting it with a lawnmower), but also liability for the policy holder.  If someone is injured while on the property which you are renting, or you accidentally injure someone while on the property, renter’s insurance often covers legal fees, court costs, etc.

Finally, renter’s policies are versatile.  They cover theft, fire, snow/ice, and many more perils, even while you travel.  In other words, if someone breaks in and steals a large amount of your personal belongings when you’re away, they are covered under your policy.  They can be tailored to meet your individual needs, and to suit your budget.
