Pool Time for Your Pooch: Keeping Your Pets Safe Around The Pool

dog-168815_640Here in Florida, most everyone either has their own pool at home, or at the very least, a community pool in their neighborhood.  For those with small children, vigilance is preached and many parents and guardians go above and beyond watching over their little ones, especially when spending time in and around the water.  However, such vigilance isn’t always thought about by “pet parents”, and those who have dogs (and cats) might not be aware of the risks that water can pose to their furry pal.

So, how can you keep your pet safe around the pool this summer?

First, if you have your own pool, invest in safety equipment.  Pool fencing is a must (for pets and for kids), but for extra security, consider having a pool alarm installed.  These systems alert you (both inside AND outside your home) if anything breaks the surface of the water, so you can act fast.  They can be turned off for parties or swimming time, and then activated again when everyone is done.  For those with pets who can’t/don’t swim, or very young/very elderly pets that can’t get themselves out of the water once in, pool alarms offer peace of mind.

If your pet does get into the pool and can’t get out, have an exit strategy already planned out.  If your dog is small, the answer is simple.  Grab him/her and pull them out!  However, if your dog is too large to handle easily, having a leash by the pool to clip on and pull them up, or a way to help them float to the nearest side or the shallow end, can be smart.  It’s much easier to have a well-thought out plan in place rather than trying to figure out how to safe your pet in a moment of panic.

Another important feature to consider when your pet is older is a ramp.  Having a ramp installed for your pool means that elderly dogs can easily walk in/out and not be forced to scramble up wet stairs, or up and over the side.  These ramps serve a double duty, since they are also much easier to use for children, or those carrying young kids into and out of the swimming pool.

We hope these tips will help you feel more at ease while you enjoy time in the water with your pooch this summer.  Swimming is a great way to beat the heat for man and pet alike, and by using the tips above, you can make sure you’re both safe when swimming!  Another way to keep your pet safe this summer?  Invest in a pet insurance policy.  This coverage is key to protecting your furry friend against sickness and catastrophe, since it can help mitigate the cost of emergency medical care, ongoing care, and, when the need arises, final expense costs.  Ask Carroll Marshall Insurance which plan is best for you, and we can customize a plan that fits your needs and your budget.  Call us for an appointment or visit our local Winter Haven office for more information!
