Protect Your Pooch: Why You Need Pet Insurance

bulldog-2144110_640Pet insurance isn’t usually seen in your “typical” list of insurance policies recommended by advisors. It would likely be considered a luxury type of policy, or one only purchased by those with excess funds to spend.  However, pet insurance is a need for those who consider their beloved pet a part of their family, and it could end up saving you a lot of money in the long run.  How?

Well, pet insurance policies cover a multitude of things related to your canine (or feline, feathered or small-mammal) friend, including:

  • treatment due to illness or accident
  • boarding fees accrued during medical treatments
  • euthanasia and/or cremation fees
  • payouts for stolen pets (usually the market price for the stolen animal)
  • and more…

The cost of pet insurance varies widely, depending on what type of policy you choose.  Some policies cover only a set amount toward injury or illness, and once treatment extends beyond that you are responsible for additional costs.  Other policies have a time-limit on certain treatments for various illnesses or injuries, while still others cover your pet exclusively for life (usually the most expensive option).  What type of protection plan you choose for your animal companion depends on an array of factors like your budget for the monthly premium, how much your pet is worth, whether your pet is a pure breed, the gender of your pet, and more.  Policies take all of these items into account when determining the price of your policy, and that will help you make the best and most educated decision for your pet.
