If you enjoy camping, and live in Central Florida, chances are you are using this week’s Spring Break period here in Polk County to head out on an adventure before the weather here is too hot to bear. We know that hitting the woods, whether for a couple of nights or for a whole week, requires organization and an extensive checklist when you are preparing for the trip. However, your insurance coverage probably isn’t at the top of your checklist, or even in your thoughts, as you get ready to pack up the car and go.
Obviously, taking care of your health and protecting yourself is important when you camp. First Aid kits are usually the first thing you pack, and it’s also one of the pieces of camping equipment you update most often. However, bandaids, gauze, and ointment can only go so far, and if you end up with an injury requiring emergency care, you could be left holding an expensive bill if you don’t prepare property!
Your health coverage, whether you realize it or not, is an important part of every trip, especially one involving lots of time being active outdoors since it increases your risk of injury. Obviously, the ultimate goal is not to need your coverage; however, you should prepare for each trip as if you will. First, start by double checking that your policy is up to date, and your cards are current. This will make things much smoother if you have to make a trip to a local ER or urgent care. Secondly, if you are traveling outside of your area, you need to look over your health coverage’s stipulations on medical providers. Some policies require that you have pre-approval for certain doctors, and others will only partially cover doctors or hospitals out of your network. By looking into these things ahead of time, you can prepare accordingly and avoid a lot of stress and worry later on. Finally, be sure that your healthcare policy is tailored to meet your current needs. Have you added a family member since it was last updated? Do you feel like your current deductible is too high for you to meet if something should happen? Think that you could afford a little more premium for additional coverage? All of these things are important factors to consider to be sure your protection plan is ready for your camping trip right along with your suitcases and your tent.
