Luck Isn’t Enough: Protect Your Spring Break Plans!

ANAXNZSAJ0It’s that time of year again.  No, we aren’t talking about St. Patty’s Day, although we are excited to enjoy celebrating tomorrow’s festivities.  We are talking about Spring Break.  Here in Polk County, schools are gearing up to take off for a whole week, and families are prepping for travels far and wide.  However, something that often fails to come to mind is checking on travel insurance before they start booking foreign (or domestic) getaways.  There are countless people leaving their much-anticipated vacations completely unprotected, putting them at risk for all kinds of disasters, and we just don’t want to see that happen.

So, why consider travel insurance instead of relying on your luck?  Well, first consider some of these statistics…

  • On average, 12% of all travelers’ trips are affected by weather issues or other natural disasters.
  • Over 50% of the claims made on travel insurance are medically related.
  • Around 75% of travelers would admit to being more “adventurous” when on vacation (read: adventurous can sometimes mean risky behavior).
  • While most people purchase travel insurance for trip cancellation protection, only around 40% of claims are for this purpose. That means 60% of claims on travel insurance were for other reasons.

Obviously, travel insurance carries some interesting statistics and numbers, but how does that relate to you?  Well, if you are traveling, specifically a long distance or outside of the country, you are at risk of not being covered by your regular insurance policies.  For example, you may be left unprotected in cases such as…

  • accidents
  • illness
  • dental emergencies
  • trip cancellations
  • lost luggage
  • rental car damages

These are scenarios that would likely ruin your spring break fun.  They are also scenarios that would be covered by a travel insurance plan.  If you are traveling, nothing will ruin a holiday excursion or fun trip like an accident or injury that leaves you financially reeling.  Wouldn’t it be so much nicer to enjoy your trip knowing that you’re covered regardless of the situation?
