Fun in the Sun (and How to Protect Yourself)

sun-protection-1710077_640It’s National UV Safety Month, and here in Florida, the July weather is living up to the reputation the Sunshine State has established for itself. The hot temperatures come with plenty of sunshine, and while it’s great for the soul, and even for our landscaping, it can take its toll on your eyes and skin, often with dangerous consequences. The sun puts out UV rays that result in, at the very least, a minor sunburn (which is still bad for your skin), or at its worst, higher degree burns and/or retinal damage. Down the road, skin cancer is a huge concern of those who have been exposed to continual UV rays from the sun without skin protection. Because we are so far south (closer to the equator!) and have a LOT of sun exposure in Florida, we feel the need to share the best ways to protect yourself and your family from harmful rays this summer so you can enjoy the great outdoors worry-free.

Cover up. Wearing sun-protective clothing is important when shielding your skin from the sun. Choose light colors in breathable fabrics to avoid overheating. Note: clothing with UV protection built in is available on today’s market, and is a HUGE plus when attempting to enjoy outside activities while staying safe. Don’t forget that your head needs to be clothed as well! A baseball cap, a sun hat, a fishing hat, or whatever your style statement of choice might be will help protect your head and face from the sun’s rays.

It’s ok to be shady. We’re talking about wearing some shades. Sunglasses are a huge part of life in Florida, and while it’s ok to use the inexpensive option from the drugstore in a pinch, or as a fashion statement alone, but for regular, sun-protective wear, opt for sunglasses that are high-quality and proven to block a high percentage of harmful rays. Polarized sunglasses are the best option on the market, and are often worth the cost. Choose sunglasses for infants and small children that have a flexible frame and are strapped onto the face to avoid them being removed continually (and negating their sun protective qualities).

Put up a screen. Rather, put it on. Sunscreen is perhaps the most important element of sun protection, as it can be placed on pretty much any skin, and with the huge variety of options available, even those with the most sensitive skin should be able to find something that works for them. Opt for an SPF of 50 preferably, as it will block most UVA and UVB rays, and is the best way to keep your skin healthy.

As your local insurance provider, we value your health and wellness, and we want to see you and the ones you love enjoy a fun-filled summer without the risks. We encourage you to utilize the tips above whether you’re hitting the beach, heading out to the lake, or simply hanging out in the back yard. Enjoy the second half of your summer, and when questions or concerns about your coverage arise, you know who to call!
