Winter Car Care: What You Should Know

winter-tires-2861853_640Since we’re in the throes of winter here in Florida, and for us that means a LOT of temperature fluctuation as the weather can’t seem to make up its mind this year. Many people pay close attention to the heating and cooling of their home, taking care of their lawns and/or landscaping to protect it from unhealthy conditions (like really cold weather!) and making sure their pets are comfortable depending on that day’s conditions. However, one thing most people tend to forget about in regards to weather-specific care is their car. While your vehicle doesn’t require excessive maintenance when the temperatures change, they are actually sensitive to the elements to a certain degree, and there are things you can do to make sure your vehicle runs at its best no matter the time of year.
For Florida residents, this list can look a little different than that of our northern friends. While our cold-weather neighbors deal with snow, ice, and salt that can wreak havoc on their cars, we are (mostly) exempt from that here in the Sunshine State. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when the weather swings from cold, to warm, to cold again.
  • Tire Pressure. Your tires are sensitive to the weather as cold air tends to make them deflate slightly and warm air can cause them to expand. While some fluctuation is fine, you’ll want to keep an eye on your car’s tire pressure sensors, or periodically check the pressure yourself, to make sure all four wheels are balanced, in the correct range of air pressure, and the safest possible foundation for your car when you hit the road.
  • Fluids. Changes in temps can affect various fluids within your car, especially if you’ve done any traveling out of state where the weather is extremely cold. You’ll want to top off your fluids on a regular basis, and ensure that your car isn’t going without one of its much-needed elements.
  • Windshield Repairs. If you got a small chip or crack in your windshield over the past year, and have just decide to let it go because it’s “not a big deal”, that could be a huge and costly mistake. A small crack can turn into a BIG problem if water gets into the space and then freezes during a cold snap. That can cause the damage to widen and grow larger, or worse, cause your windshield to crack all the way across requiring a full replacement. If you have any needed window repairs, get them done ASAP before you end up with a much more expensive bill.
Of course, the best protection for your car no matter the time of year is having a quality auto coverage plan. Auto insurance not only provides for things like the needed repairs and replacements to keep your car at its best, and keep you safe, but it also protects your finances as it aids in liability and other far-reaching aspects of vehicle-ownership.
